Feist made it big with The Reminder, which is when I first got to know her. Since then, I’ve sought her out and was so happy to download and listen to Metals this past week. Where The Reminder was mostly quiet with a few poppy hits, Metals puncuates Feist’s high, creaky voice with syncopated drums and shouts. There is also something that invokes wide, open expanses, which is hardly surprising since the album was recorded in a studio built into the side of a cliff in Big Sur. There are soaring strings and vocals enough to make you want to take this album on a road trip out west. The thing lacking on this album is a poppy “1234,” but it is a beautiful album, something to listen to on colder fall nights with a cup of tea and some thoughts. Thoughts, of course, enter easily with this album. It is mournful and celebratory, highlighting heartache and jubilation in ways that anyone who has been on the rollercoaster of life can identify with.
